  • Seasonal variation: Water quality at the same location can differ significantly between summer and winter, or even from one week to the next.

How to Check Water Quality Before You Swim

Fortunately, wild swimmers today have more tools available to them than ever before. Checking water quality doesn’t have to mean waiting for official bathing water reports, which can lag behind real-time conditions by weeks.

Use Official Monitoring Data — But Don’t Rely on It Alone

The Environment Agency and Natural Resources Wales publish bathing water quality classifications for designated bathing sites across the UK. These are a useful starting point, but they reflect historical data gathered over several seasons. A site rated ‘Excellent’ can still have poor water quality on any given day following a pollution event.

Test the Water Yourself
