Sewage and Agricultural Runoff
Sadly, water quality in many UK rivers and lakes has been under pressure for decades. Sewage overflows — both permitted storm overflows and unpermitted discharges — introduce harmful bacteria such as E. coli and enterococci into watercourses. Agricultural runoff adds further pollutants including nitrates, phosphates, and slurry. The consequences of swimming in sewage-contaminated water can range from an upset stomach to more serious gastrointestinal illness, ear infections, and skin irritation. Leptospirosis (Weil’s Disease)

Infection typically occurs when contaminated water enters the body through cuts, abrasions, the eyes, or the mouth.
Symptoms can take up to three weeks to appear and often begin like a flu — fever, headache, and muscle aches. If you’ve been wild swimming and develop these symptoms, it’s essential to tell your GP about your recent activities so they can test and treat promptly. The good news is that with early antibiotic treatment, recovery is usually straightforward.
Blue-Green Algae
On warm, still summer days you might notice a greenish or bluish scum forming on the surface of lakes and reservoirs. This is cyanobacteria, commonly called blue-green algae, and it can produce powerful toxins that are harmful to both humans and animals. Exposure can cause skin rashes, vomiting, and in severe cases, liver damage. Dogs are particularly vulnerable and have died after drinking or swimming in affected water.
Crucially, you cannot tell by looking whether a bloom is toxic — the only safe approach is to avoid swimming entirely when a bloom is present and to check local authority warnings before heading out.
How to Swim Smarter, Not Just Harder
None of the above should put you off wild swimming — but it should encourage a more informed approach. Here’s how experienced open-water swimmers stay one step ahead:
- Check official water quality data — the Environment Agency and Scottish Environment Protection Agency publish monitoring results for designated bathing waters. These are a useful baseline, but they’re not updated in real time.
- Avoid swimming after heavy rainfall — this is when sewage overflows and agricultural runoff are most likely to spike bacterial levels significantly.
- Test your spot yourself — if you swim regularly at the same river bend, beach, or lake, having your own test kit means you’re not relying solely on data that may be days or weeks old. A quick E. coli and total bacteria test can give you real-time confidence before you enter the water.
- Cover cuts and abrasions — waterproof dressings reduce the entry points for bacteria and Leptospira.
- Swim with your mouth closed — it sounds simple, but avoiding accidental ingestion is one of the easiest risk-reduction measures available.
- Shower after swimming — rinsing off promptly after a dip, especially around the face and ears, reduces exposure time to any pathogens on the skin.
